BENEFITS OF TRAILS:Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy, testifying at a Congressional hearing, credited trail construction for contributing significantly to a dramatic downtown revitalization. Of the top 12 cities in Forbes’ 2007 “Best Cities for Young Professionals” rankings, 9 have been distinguished as “bike friendly” by either Bicycle Magazine or The Bicycle Friendly Communities Campaign. Little Miami Trail users spend an average of $18.95 of food, beverage, and transportation per day and $225/person/year on clothing, equipment, and accessories. In a 2002 National Realtors and Home Builders survey of recent home buyers, trails ranked as the second most important community amenity out of a list of 18 choices. Trails have been shown to increase the value of a home by 5% or more. GREEN TRANSPORTATION:Trail networks connect neighborhoods to parks, businesses, and area attractions. Trails reduce dependence on automobiles, lowering total emissions and improving air quality. HEALTH & RECREATION:communities with trails are more active. Networks allow users of every fitness level and mode to tailor distance to their needs. Enjoyed by bike riders, runners, walkers, in-line skaters; children, families, elderly, young and mid-aged adults; residents and tourists. |
